Brushless Pump / Wire Gauge / Connect Together
Why do I need 6-gauge / 4-gauge wire for my 7/10 GPM Brushless pump when the wires coming
out of the pump are so much smaller, and how do I connect them together?
The difference in wire sizes for the pump and its feed wires may seem odd but has a simple explanation. Wires function like pipes, carrying electrons instead of fuel or air. Longer wires require larger gauges to carry the same current without voltage drop. The pump’s shorter wires are specially designed low-resistance and sufficient for their length, but the longer feed wires must be larger to compensate for their lower quality and prevent voltage loss.
For connections, butt-splice adapters with built-in gauge reduction can work, but a 4-terminal junction block is better. It allows secure connections using ring terminals for both large feed wires and smaller pump wires, ensuring no voltage drop and easy disconnection if needed.
