After Driving Fuel Pressure Falls / Louder / Quits
After 30 minutes or so of driving, fuel pressure starts to fall, then the fuel pump gets louder and/or seems to quit running altogether. What’s wrong, is my pump going bad?
You may be experiencing EFI vapor lock, often caused by hot fuel in the tank. Even with fuel recycling, under-hood heat warms the fuel, raising tank temperatures over time. Symptoms include pump noise, fluctuating pressure, and cavitation at the pump inlet, where vapor forms, disrupting lubrication and causing overheating. This can lead to complete vapor lock.
To prevent cavitation and vapor lock, ensure proper system design: use clean, low-restriction lines and filters, keep the tank full on hot days, reduce pump speed with a controller during low load, route lines away from heat, and ensure proper tank ventilation. Address any fuel access restrictions.
